I first heard about kettle bell exercises by my ex-boyfriend. He's gone, but I kept the kettlebells ;) they're great for calorie burning. Just wondering if there is a more effective fat burning and muscle firming (building) exercise around? Btw, love the site!

Active or passive rest is as important as training in the gym as this is when all the growth takes place.
See http://www.ironsimba.co.uk/p/simple-secret-to-building-muscle.html.

However, over-enthusiastic beginners too often do not want to 'waste' their time resting when they could be training.

If you really want to build muscle mass, then you have to focus on what you eat each day. Regardless of how great your workouts are, you will not build muscle mass until you get you nutrition plan in order.

One of the easiest ways to realize muscle growth is by implementing a post workout recovery meal that is paced with protein and fast acting carbohydrates.

Here's a link to an article I just wrote about post workout muscle building nutrition:

Great article; you hit on one the major point that gets skimmed over or totally missed by a lot of people, “the need for rest”. Muscle is built in times of rest, not during workout. When I first started out I trained every day and didn’t have much success. It wasn’t until I was taking 1-3 days off that I really noticed big muscle gains.

Thanks for a good read.

I would fully agree that technique is one of the most important things when you workout. If you don't have good technique you put yourself at risk for injury, develop imbalances and bad habits.

I find many people think that they have good technique and that they are practicing good technique when they really are not. You can read about good technique and watch other people but until you get taken through the movements by somebody you really don't know.

Even if just for one session I recommend a lot of people get a session with a good personal trainer to go over technique on some of the major compound movements like squats, deadlifts, lunges and any olympic/power lifting. Then, granted you got a good PT, you will really know whether or not your techneque is good and you can continue to practice what you were taught.

Building muscle is easy as learning the alphabet. But you got have the right frame and genetics in the first place! I am naturally skinny with a small frame, I trained for 2 years 3 -4 times a week. I ate a lot as this was never a problem for me and gained quite a bit of muscle.

I got to the stage when my body let me know "enough". I managed to get to a stage where I could bench 80k for a single rep with 2 spotters, well chuffed! But I went home to look in the mirror to find that all that hard work had gone to my gut.

I have since given up and took up mountain biking, losing most of my gut but keeping the muscle I gained. Something tells me that I would have gained this muscle with age, without that hard work and pain!
